Fallbrook CA 92028 deck algae removal overview

Edwin’s wraparound decking had become overgrown with thick, slippery algae, making everyday use unsafe for him as an older gentleman living alone. Before service, the boards were slick and dark green; after our treatment and controlled-pressure rinse, the deck’s natural color and traction were restored. Edwin was thrilled with the transformation and chose to schedule annual cleanings to keep the algae from returning.

The scope covered the full perimeter deck, steps, and landings, plus a light rinse of adjoining walkways to ensure a consistent, clean finish around the home. Edwin’s priorities were clear: remove the slip hazard, protect the wood, and avoid any damage to nearby landscaping. We designed an approach that combined a targeted algae-killing pretreatment, gentle agitation, and calibrated exterior pressure washing to lift biofilm without raising the wood grain. The expected outcome was a safer, brighter, and longer-lasting clean—and that’s exactly what we delivered.

Tools for Fallbrook CA deck algae pressure washing

To safely deep-clean the decking, we used a commercial pressure washer with variable pressure controls, operating at low PSI for wood surfaces. Application was done with pump sprayers, followed by soft-bristle deck brushes for agitation. Our cleaning chemistry included a wood-safe, oxygenated cleaner paired with an algaecide and surfactant to break down the thick biofilm. For flat sections we employed a compact surface cleaner to maintain even cleaning, then switched to a wide fan-tip wand for precise rinsing along edges, rails, and risers.

Challenges during Fallbrook CA deck algae removal

Several shaded, north-facing sections had heavy, long-established growth that had penetrated the wood’s texture, making traction especially poor. Aggressive pressure could have scarred the boards, so we extended dwell time on the pretreatment and used controlled, low-pressure passes with additional brushing. Handrails and painted posts required extra care to avoid lifting finish, so we masked sensitive spots and hand-scrubbed them. We also encountered tight board gaps packed with organic debris; clearing those channels improved drainage and helped prevent future moisture retention that fuels algae regrowth.

Process for Fallbrook CA deck algae pressure washing

We began with a full assessment and safety walk, documenting slick zones and noting sensitive plant beds. After pre-wetting landscaping and covering exterior outlets, we applied a wood-safe algae treatment from the farthest corner backward to maintain safe footing. The solution was allowed to dwell, then agitated with soft brushes to release the thick biofilm. Using a wide fan tip, we rinsed at low pressure in the direction of the grain, working board by board to avoid lap marks and feathering edges into adjacent areas for a uniform finish. Steps, landings, and railings were detail-cleaned, and stubborn patches were spot-treated and re-brushed. We finished with a light post-treatment algaestat to slow regrowth, performed a clean water rinse, and conducted a final walkthrough with Edwin. He approved the results and enrolled in yearly maintenance to keep his Fallbrook deck safe and algae-free.
